Max Verstappen is set to compete in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this weekend. After a disappointing performance in Monza, where the Dutch driver had to settle for sixth place, he is eager to bounce back in Baku. Despite Red Bull’s frequent missteps in Italy, Verstappen hopes the team will come prepared in Azerbaijan. “We need to regain our form,” says the three-time world champion.

Red Bull has historically performed well on the street circuit of Baku – the Austrians have won the last three editions of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Max Verstappen has one victory to his name in this transcontinental country. However, Red Bull appears to be the underdog this weekend; both McLaren and Ferrari were faster than the reigning world champion last week.

Have Balance Issues Been Resolved?

“I spent this week with the team in the factory and put in many hours in the simulator,” Max Verstappen reveals. “Monza was a tough race, and it’s our priority to get back in shape. We always want to be more competitive, and the team has worked hard to fix the car’s problems.” The balance of the RB20 left much to be desired during the recent Grands Prix. After the defeat in Monza, Verstappen even compared his usually reliable car to ‘a monster’.

End of the European Season

“The European season is officially over,” the 26-year-old driver continues. “The race in Baku is an immediate challenge. It’s an interesting track; a street circuit with long straight sections is actually unique.” For Max Verstappen, it’s crucial that he keeps both McLarens behind him. The papayas smell the constructor’s title, while Verstappen must protect his own world championship against the advancing Lando Norris.
