Former Ferrari team boss, Mattia Binotto, is set to join Audi’s Formula 1 project. The German automotive giant announced this on Tuesday. Binotto will assume the roles of Chief Operating and Chief Technical Officer from August 1. Audi has completely overhauled the management of Sauber, with CEO Andreas Seidl and chief representative Oliver Hoffmann being immediately dismissed.

Ex-team boss Mattia Binotto has been enjoying life outside of Formula 1 for over a year now. At the end of 2022, after four years of loyal service, he was let go in favor of Fred Vasseur. Since then, he has not played a role in the sport. However, recent rumors suggested that the 54-year-old Italian might make a comeback in the premier class. Alpine and Aston Martin had already shown interest. However, it was announced on Tuesday that he will be joining the future Audi team.

Clear Management Structures

“I am delighted that we have been able to attract Mattia Binotto to our Formula 1 project,” announces Gernot Döllner, CEO of Audi, in a press release. “With his extensive experience in Formula 1, he will undoubtedly be able to make a valuable contribution. Our goal is to get the entire project up to speed through clear management structures, defined responsibilities, and efficient decision-making processes.”

CEO Andreas Seidl and chief representative Oliver Hoffmann clearly have not been included in this picture – both must immediately step down. Seidl joined from McLaren two years ago to lead the transition from Sauber to Audi. “I want to thank Oliver and Andreas for their work and their commitment in preparing this project,” concludes Döllner.
