For some, the Monaco Grand Prix is an iconic race, a crown jewel in the Formula 1 calendar. For others, the race through the principality is a sporting mockery, typically offering little spectacle (read: overtaking maneuvers). Red Bull’s top man, Helmut Marko, clearly belongs to the latter category: “The race is usually a farce,” he believes, in the run-up to the 2025 edition.
The 82-year-old Marko expresses his reservations about the Monaco GP in the current era to Austrian OE24. “From the driver’s perspective, it’s only the qualification that counts, that one fast lap. The race is usually a farce. Last year, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr were sometimes slower than in Formula 3,” Marko asserts. Leclerc won his home race last year.
According to Marko, things were different in the past. “In my time – I drove Formula 3, Formula Vee, and Formula 1 in Monaco – things were different. It was a real challenge, without guardrails, without anything.”
