On Thursday, Fernando Alonso announced his contract extension with Aston Martin through 2026. But how does the Spaniard maintain his fitness in this demanding sport at his age?

Strength, focus, alertness, and finesse. Sharpness, courage, fitness, balance, and speed. These are just some of the attributes that drivers must possess to stay afloat in the pinnacle of the sport, both literally and figuratively. Hence, a robust body and a strong mind are essential.

Consider this: Never before has there been such a packed calendar with as many as 24 races. The sport has never been more popular, resulting in enormous attention for drivers both on and off the track. And never has so much money been involved in the sport, leading to significant commercial interests and the associated pressure.

In short, drivers are pushed to their limits both physically and mentally. “It’s perhaps more demanding than ever,” says Fernando Alonso when asked. He is the longest-serving driver among all current Formula 1 racers. Now 42 years old, he exemplifies how one can physiologically endure two decades at the top of global motorsport.

Not because it’s all not so heavy; quite the contrary. But because he sought the right guidance, found the right physical and mental balance, and can channel all the commercial and various other interests that play a role today, including publicity and the influence of social media.

“The sport has become increasingly demanding,” Alonso (active in F1 in 2001, 2003 to 2018, and since 2021) states regarding the physical and mental challenge. “Fortunately, I’m fitter than ever.” Ideally, he would like to continue until he’s 50. “But it’s a grueling season, with 24 races on the calendar. For everyone, including me. I’m 42 years old.”

What can his body still handle? The Spaniard raises this question himself. “There’s no shortage of good physical condition.” According to the two-time world champion, the reason is clear. “I owe it to a combination of various important aspects: the right training, but also, for example, working with a nutritionist. In this area, there are always developments, and you try to improve yourself. It will help me endure the long season.”
