Logan Sargeant is opening a new chapter in his motorsport career. The former Formula 1 driver will race for Ford in the Hypercar class of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) from 2027. The American automaker announced it during Red Bull’s season launch in Detroit. The move brings Sargeant back onto the global stage almost a year and a half after leaving Williams; next year he will, among other events, contest the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The 25-year-old Sargeant started 36 Grands Prix for Williams between 2023 and 2024. He is now shifting his focus to endurance racing. At Ford he will line up alongside experienced campaigners Mike Rockenfeller and Sebastian Priaulx. The marque is making a serious bid for WEC success. Notably, Sargeant’s switch to Ford also places him indirectly inside the Red Bull orbit; the new engine partnership between Ford and Red Bull links the American manufacturer to drivers such as Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar.

From Formula 1 to WEC

The American driver had already taken tentative steps toward the WEC. Last November he took part in the official rookie test in Bahrain and raced last year in the LMP2 class of the IMSA SportsCar Championship. That experience clearly left its mark. Dan Sayers, programme manager for the Ford Racing Hypercar programme, said he has strong confidence in the American. “Logan Sargeant brings a level of technical refinement and experience that is essential for a programme of this scale.”

The move to the WEC marks a fresh start for Sargeant after a difficult spell in Formula 1. In his rookie season at Williams he scored one World Championship point and initially kept his drive into 2024. The second year, however, proved tougher; the pressure mounted and he was ultimately replaced for the final nine races by Franco Colapinto. Support from Williams remained strong, though: team principal James Vowles had earlier spoken positively about the prospects of his former driver, saying that Sargeant ‘absolutely has the qualities to become a champion in many other series.’
