How did Liam Lawson find out he would be a Red Bull driver in 2025? The New Zealander reveals this himself, and also shares how long he has been dreaming of an opportunity to drive for the Austrian racing team. “Since then, I’ve been dreaming of becoming a Red Bull driver,” says the upcoming teammate of Max Verstappen. The driver from Hastings is also already thinking about the hopefully next step in his Formula 1 career.
Liam Lawson will take the Red Bull seat next to Max Verstappen in 2025. The New Zealander thus takes over from Sergio Pérez, even though he has only driven eleven Grand Prix races. Lawson vividly remembers how he received the news from team boss Christian Horner. After the Abu Dhabi GP, Lawson had a meeting with the Red Bull top about his future, and immediately afterwards received a call from the team boss. “He immediately said: ‘Welcome to Red Bull Racing!'”, reveals the New Zealander in the Talking Bull podcast.
Lawson immediately called his father to share the joyous news. “I only recently realized what they have all sacrificed for me,” reveals the upcoming Red Bull driver, indicating that his parents even sold their house to finance his Formula 1 career. “It’s the first step. I’m now in (at Red Bull), but there’s still a long way to go.
Long-Cherished Dream
With only eleven Grand Prix starts under his belt, Liam Lawson is the driver who has been promoted the fastest from Red Bull’s sister team to the main team. The New Zealander had previously indicated that his promotion was the fulfillment of a ‘long-cherished dream’, but he reveals in the podcast exactly how long. “The game F1 2010 came out when I was eight years old. I played as Mark Webber, so I could beat Sebastian Vettel. Since then, I’ve always dreamed of becoming a Red Bull driver.”
Now that his greatest wish has come true, Lawson is already daring to think about his next dream. “As a Formula 1 driver, we have one goal, and that is to become world champion,” says the ambitious Lawson. “That’s been my goal since I was a child. I’m in a good position now, but I don’t believe it will happen immediately. The team’s goal is to win the constructors’ title, and I will contribute to that.” The New Zealander also hopes to learn a lot from his teammate and world champion, Max Verstappen.
