Liam Lawson returned to Racing Bulls in Faenza, Italy, with a saddened expression, reveals team boss Peter Bayer about the New Zealander. After two races with Red Bull, Liam Lawson was demoted back to the sister team and replaced by Yuki Tsunoda. ‘He was still a bit confused after everything had happened so quickly,’ says Bayer.

After just two races, Liam Lawson’s Red Bull adventure was already over. The New Zealander had a rough start with the Austrians, failing to advance beyond Q1 in the qualifiers during both race weekends, and was therefore replaced by Yuki Tsunoda ahead of the Japanese GP. Racing Bulls team boss Peter Bayer reveals what Lawson’s return to the sister team meant for the New Zealander.

“It took him a while to fully process it,” Bayer admits. “The first time he came to Italy, he looked a bit sad. That’s how I saw him when he walked in. He was still a bit confused after everything had happened so quickly.”

The Old Liam

Fortunately for both Lawson and the team boss himself, the driver quickly bounced back. “Liam knew the people, he knew the tools and the settings. I thought he really quickly returned to the old Liam.” The Racing Bulls team boss also immediately explains who this old Lawson is. “He’s a great driver, he’s someone with a great sense of humor. We’re seeing that again now.” After Lawson also showed a good pace in Bahrain, Bayer is confident that the New Zealander is looking forward to a good racing season.
