Reserve driver Liam Lawson completed over a hundred laps at the Monza circuit with Red Bull on Tuesday. During a tire test for Pirelli, the New Zealander once again had the opportunity to experience Formula 1. Lawson still hopes for a seat in 2025, although options are gradually running out. This month, he should find out if he can join one of the Red Bull teams.
In an attempt to get a handle on the RB20, Red Bull participated in a so-called Pirelli test on Tuesday. The tire manufacturer invites Formula 1 teams to drive a few laps with different compounds under the car. On Tuesday, Monza was the setting for such a test; George Russell stepped in for Mercedes in his W15, and reserve driver Liam Lawson served for Red Bull.
Lawson’s Performance and Future in Formula 1
Lawson completed a total of 104 laps on the Italian asphalt. The 22-year-old driver is set to prove himself again on Wednesday, this time in the VCARB 01 of sister team Visa RB. Both Red Bull teams have repeatedly emphasized that Liam Lawson is invaluable to the development of the car. Despite this, the New Zealander, who was already allowed to substitute for Daniel Ricciardo five times last year, hopes to sign a real Formula 1 contract soon.
‘Deadline in September’
Helmut Marko previously assured that Lawson will secure a spot on the grid next year. The Austrian later added that a decision about his future will be made in September. This deadline is rapidly approaching. Realistically, he has one option left within the Red Bull family: Daniel Ricciardo’s current seat at Visa RB is still up for grabs. However, according to multiple sources, Sergio Pérez could also be sacrificed in favor of the New Zealander.
Elsewhere, the last Sauber seat is still available. If Liam Lawson does not get a contract within the Red Bull teams, he says he is ‘open to other options’. Sauber, which will be taken over by Audi from 2026, has already shown interest in the young reserve driver.
