With the sixth fastest time in the Austrian Grand Prix qualifiers, Liam Lawson exceeded his own expectations. He will start from the third row on Sunday. He appeared in the paddock with a smile after the session. “It’s been a while,” the New Zealander observed with a broad grin.
Lawson had a disastrous start to the season as Max Verstappen‘s new teammate at Red Bull Racing, and was subsequently demoted to the training team, Racing Bulls. Ironically, at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Lawson was the fastest driver in the Red Bull family during the qualifiers, even outpacing Max Verstappen.
“This was cool, a good qualification,” Lawson described his own performance. “We’ve been working hard on the car recently, so it’s nice to see that we could show it in the qualifiers. The car’s speed has been there for a while, but we hadn’t really managed to show it in the qualifiers, which was building up pressure. This is therefore a nice result, both for me and the team. But of course, it’s all about the race, and that’s a different story.”
