Liam Lawson once again demonstrated his talent by finishing ninth in the chaotic and wet Brazilian Grand Prix. The young New Zealander matched his best result in Formula 1, following previous ninth-place finishes in Singapore and Texas earlier this year. Although the result was solid, Lawson felt there was potential for more, especially considering his impressive qualifying performance.
Strong Qualification
Surprisingly, Lawson managed to secure the fifth starting position during the qualification, his best qualifying result to date. This placed him at the front of the grid among experienced drivers. Unfortunately, the race got off to a difficult start for Lawson: he was hit by Oscar Piastri at the chaotic start, leading to a spin and loss of time. “My race was disrupted when I spun at the start,” Lawson explains. Despite the tough beginning, he admirably recovered and fought his way back into the points.
The conditions at Interlagos were far from ideal, with heavy rainfall making the race particularly challenging. However, Lawson held his ground and completed the race in ninth place, a solid performance in such unpredictable conditions. “It was a brutal race. A matter of survival.”
Looking Ahead
Although Lawson is pleased with his points finish in Brazil, he remains ambitious by being strict with himself. “Two cars in the points is good and great for the team. Yet, I think there might have been more potential, especially considering the good starting position.” With his ninth place, he has once again shown that he excels in various conditions and can compete with the top of the field. With this result, Lawson continues to establish himself as a promising rookie, getting ever closer to the established order.
