In a recent interview with The Times, seven-time F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton opened up about his personal battles with depression and mental health issues throughout his life.

Hamilton’s Struggles with Depression

Hamilton shared his experiences with depression, particularly during his childhood. He started racing cars before the age of 10, a high-pressure environment that contributed to his mental health struggles. “I’ve had issues with my mental health all my life, particularly depression, from a very young age. I was about 13 years old. I think it’s related to the pressure of auto racing, difficulties at school, and bullying. I had no one to talk to. I also had very difficult times in my twenties,” he confessed.

Hamilton’s career in F1 took off rapidly, with his debut at 21 and his first of seven titles the following year.

Growth and Maturity

The 39-year-old Briton discussed his personal growth and maturity over the years. “We learn things that our parents have passed on to us, we better understand our way of reacting to things, how we can change it. What used to make me angry in the past doesn’t make me angry today,” he said.

Periods of Silent Retreat

The Mercedes driver explained that he regularly takes periods of silent retreat to care for his mental health and hopes to find a therapist to work with in the future. “I consulted a lady when I was younger but it didn’t help. Despite everything, I would like to find someone in the future,” he shared.

Overcoming Challenges

Hamilton admitted that these challenging times have undoubtedly shaped him into the driver he is today. When asked if his difficult journey gave him extra motivation on the track, he responded, “1,000 percent.”
