Liam Lawson has clarified his response to the incident with Williams driver Carlos Sainz Jr. The New Zealander is still surprised by the Spaniard’s reaction, who criticized Lawson’s driving behavior after the race.

Liam Lawson and Carlos Sainz clashed during the Dutch GP in Zandvoort, leading to a heated discussion afterwards. Sainz was visibly dissatisfied with Lawson’s move and clearly expressed his frustration. “He often opts for contact and takes unnecessary risks,” Sainz said after the race. “Hopefully, he learns something from this, as such actions also cost him too many points.”

Liam Lawson was clear about his action on the track, which he explained during the race weekend in Monza. “I was simply defending my position,” he told PlanetF1. “The rules are written as they are. As drivers, we know that we sometimes disagree with certain rules or that they do not always feel logical. But this is how the rules are.” The Racing Bulls driver continued: “He went for an overtaking move on the outside, and yet I am labeled as aggressive. I don’t understand that.”

Lawson also emphasized the missed opportunities for the team. “We were on the verge of finishing with two cars in the top five, but I’m not the type to yell over the radio or in the media.” Finally, he stated that there has been no contact between the two drivers. “I haven’t heard anything from him. Given his anger, I expected he would want to talk it out, but that hasn’t happened.”
