After a long wait, Lando Norris finally secured a pole position again on Saturday evening in Mexico City. He hadn’t achieved this feat since the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. “I’m glad to be back on pole,” admitted the British McLaren driver in his first reaction on the grid. “It was about time.”
In Q3 of the Mexico GP qualifiers, Norris clocked 1.15,586 minutes, convincingly outpacing the competition. The Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton came closest to him.
“I thought my lap was solid,” Norris said. “But when I heard my time, I was pleasantly surprised. I’ve been feeling good all day,” added Norris, who had also dominated Free Practice 3 (FP3). Norris did admit that he initially became ‘a bit nervous’ in Q3 when the Ferraris suddenly found their speed. “But I pulled it off when it mattered. And I’m happy about that.”
So, he will start from pole in Mexico on Sunday. Norris is not worried about the long straight stretch towards turn 1, he assured. “No, it won’t cost me any sleep. I’ve had good races here in the past and I only focus on the things I can control.”
