After clinching the world championship, Lando Norris was swamped by a flood of congratulatory messages. The Brit admits he hasn’t been able to read them all in the weeks since sealing the title, but he didn’t miss the message from David Beckham: ‘He’s a cool guy’.
No country in Formula 1 history has produced more world champions than the United Kingdom. Yet Lando Norris is only the eleventh British champion, which makes his title feel special for his compatriots. One of his best-known countrymen, former footballer David Beckham, messaged the driver straight after his title triumph — and he was by no means the only one.
“To be honest, I haven’t even read half of the messages yet,” Norris admits on a recent episode of the Fast And The Curious podcast. “I’ve got so many that I haven’t even looked through them. I should do it, but it takes a fair bit of time. I’ve probably replied to about half of them. So I’ve only got a few days left to get through them all, whether they’re on Instagram, WhatsApp or whatever, but there are just a lot of amazing people.”

Still, Norris has already been able to read Beckham’s message. It wasn’t the first time the ex-footballer got in touch with the F1 driver. “We chat now and then about different things,” Norris reveals. “He did send me a message. David’s always fantastic. He’s in the garage sometimes too. Like in Bahrain, Qatar and a few other places. He’s a cool guy, so it’s always nice when his name pops up.”
