Over the course of 75 years, Formula 1 has been filled with memorable moments. Some have brought tears, others laughter, but all have been etched into our collective or individual memories. In no particular order, figures from Dutch motorsport share their favourite moments, memories, or highlights from the rich history of F1. PART 1: Jan Lammers.

Jan Lammers, a former driver and the sporting director of the Dutch GP, chooses a victory that holds a special place in his heart. “The first win by Max Verstappen in Zandvoort, marking the return of the Dutch Grand Prix after 36 years. That moment speaks volumes. Firstly, it showcases a Dutchman in Formula 1 who is so successful and wins in Zandvoort. And this in a Grand Prix whose return seemed almost impossible. Secondly, it also happens in the year he becomes world champion. So for me, that is the moment, at least as far as Zandvoort is concerned.”

‘Hero to Zero’

Lammers’ own F1 journey is not to be overlooked. “My best experience as a driver was the fourth starting position in Long Beach. For the first time, it seemed like I had a chance to reach the podium, and that with a very small private team. After 200 meters, the drive broke down: it quickly became a ‘hero to zero’ experience that was very character-forming.”

For Lammers, these are two specific moments that stand out. Not to diminish others in the 75 years of Formula 1. “Because Lewis Hamilton, Schumacher, Hamilton, Lauda, Clark, you name them all: these are of course people who have all done something very special in the sport in their own way. But with that nuance, I choose the two moments I described. Event, experience, Dutch motorsport, young driver; it all comes together.”
