Jos Verstappen concludes the first day of the renowned East African Classic Rally in Kenya in a provisional fourth place. The Dutch rally driver is just outside the top three after the first three stages of the event, but he still has six stages over the coming weekend to climb the leaderboard.

While his son Max Verstappen is in Abu Dhabi contending for his championship title against the McLarens, father Jos is racing in Kenya this weekend. Along with his regular navigator Renaud Jamoul, Verstappen has embarked on what is also known as ‘the world’s toughest rally’ for the first time. The Dutch driver has ended his first day of the rally event in a commendable fourth place.

Due to his participation in the rally on the African continent, Verstappen senior will miss his son Max’s final race in Abu Dhabi this weekend. The younger Verstappen was asked about his parents’ absence prior to the race weekend at the Yas Marina Circuit. “My father is driving a rally in Africa, and my mother… well, it wasn’t planned for her to be here,” said the Dutchman. “But it also wasn’t planned for me to be involved in the title fight until the last race of the season.”
