Johnny Herbert, FIA steward and former F1 driver, appreciates the humor of Max Verstappen. The Brit found the Dutchman’s comments during the FIA press moment in São Paulo, where Verstappen pointed out the absence of the British press, quite amusing. According to Herbert, the Dutchman’s sharpness is what makes him a world champion, but it doesn’t always serve the three-time world champion well.

Max Verstappen faced criticism, particularly from the British media, following the controversial race in Mexico, where he encountered Lando Norris on the track multiple times. Damon Hill even went so far as to say that Verstappen is incapable of “racing fairly”. However, the Dutchman silenced his British critics with his powerful performance in the rain in São Paulo.

During the FIA press conference after the Brazilian race, Verstappen even asked where “all the British press had gone” when many British journalists skipped the press moment. Johnny Herbert, FIA steward and former driver, enjoys Verstappen’s humor. “I loved Max’s sense of humor during the press conference,” the Brit told SafestBettingSites. “He is so aware of what is happening around him. That’s why Max is so popular. He is sharp. That’s necessary to become a champion.”

Decent Guy

Herbert was one of the stewards on duty in Mexico, and was therefore partly responsible for Verstappen’s time penalties. The Brit still maintains that the actions of the Red Bull driver in Mexico were unacceptable in his eyes, but he is impressed by how the Dutchman consistently surpasses himself. “He sometimes struggles and doesn’t always help himself, but fundamentally, he is a very decent guy,” says Herbert.
