Sir Jackie Stewart, the three-time world champion, has made it clear at Monza that he does not support the plans of Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali to shorten Grand Prix races. He emphasizes that the sport is thriving as it is.
Domenicali had previously suggested that the current races “might be a bit too long” for younger viewers. The proposal immediately sparked strong reactions from the paddock. Fernando Alonso drew a comparison with football matches: “We don’t shorten those either.” Max Verstappen agreed, stating, “The length of the race is fine. Sport is supposed to be sometimes exciting and sometimes boring.”
With his statement, the Scottish legend joins a growing group of critics who are against shortening the Grand Prix. As Formula 1 continues to grow in popularity and attract new fans, the sentiment in the paddock seems clear: don’t change a winning formula too much.
