Multiple sources report that Jack Doohan will be stepping in for Alpine during the final race weekend in Abu Dhabi, replacing regular driver Esteban Ocon earlier than expected. Although the Frenchman is set to move to Haas only in 2025, it appears he may not be allowed to complete his contract with Alpine. For Doohan, who has never participated in a Formula 1 race weekend before, this would be a baptism of fire.
Esteban Ocon’s performance has been inconsistent in recent races. His results ranged from a double podium in São Paulo with teammate Pierre Gasly to a DNF during the Qatar GP. In the media, the French driver increasingly hinted at an alleged disadvantage within the team, suggesting that Gasly – who has already signed a new contract – was being favored. Alpine has repeatedly denied these accusations, emphasizing that both cars are equal in terms of specifications.
Is Ocon Saying Goodbye?
After the Qatar GP, Ocon’s attitude changed, while at the same time rumors emerged that Jack Doohan would already be making his debut for Alpine in Abu Dhabi. The Australian test and reserve driver has signed a contract for 2025, but may already be able to take action now.
Esteban Ocon’s response fueled further speculation: “I want to thank the team for their hard work during this race and throughout the year,” he said. “In the times when things were not going well, the engineers and mechanics stuck together, and that’s the most important thing. It’s important to look ahead and prepare for the future.
