Jack Doohan appears set to continue his career in the Japanese Super Formula. The Australian is being strongly linked with Toyota, as a return to Formula 1 with Alpine seems unlikely. Massaya Kaji, Toyota’s global motorsport director, has not confirmed this, but he has not ruled it out either.
Jack Doohan made his Formula 1 debut at the season finale in Abu Dhabi 2024. However, the adventure of the 22-year-old son of five-time 500cc world champion Mick Doohan in the premier class of motorsport was short-lived. After just six Grands Prix, he lost his racing seat at Alpine earlier this year. Doohan remained the first reserve driver for the French team.
The chance of him returning to the grid currently seems small, as Franco Colapinto’s contract is likely to be extended. “We have not decided yet, but normally stability means we keep both drivers,” Alpine advisor Flavio Briatore previously told Agence France-Presse.
Toyota
Doohan is therefore believed to have shifted his focus to Japan, where Toyota is expanding its driver program. The Australian is being strongly linked with a seat at Kondo Racing in the Super Formula, the top class of Japanese motorsport. Recently, father Mick was spotted in the Super GT paddock in Motegi, where he spoke with Haas team boss Ayao Komatsu, whose team has close ties with Toyota. “There is nothing concrete I can say right now, but he is a good driver,” said Massaya Kaji, Toyota’s global motorsport director, to Motorsport.com. He did not confirm that Doohan is actually moving to the Super Formula, but he did not rule it out either.
