Sauber experienced a turbulent race during the Mexican Grand Prix. Nico Hülkenberg retired early due to an engine issue, while Gabriel Bortoleto managed to climb from P16 to secure a point. However, due to Oliver Bearman’s strong fourth-place finish for Haas, Sauber has slipped back to ninth place in the constructors’ championship.
Nico Hülkenberg did not mince words after the Mexican GP. “Of course, it’s a tough day for us,” the German driver responded after the race. “We had engine problems from the formation lap, which essentially ended our race before it really began. It’s frustrating for the entire team, as we knew we had the pace to fight for a good result. All in all, a disappointing weekend, but we’re going to work hard to understand what went wrong and perform better in Brazil.”
On the other hand, Gabriel Bortoleto managed to secure the last point. It was the Brazilian’s first points finish since Monza in early September. “Starting from P16 and finishing in the points shows how strong our race pace and the team’s strategy were. Now I’m really looking forward to my first home race in Brazil. I don’t feel any pressure — I’m just proud that I can go there with a strong weekend behind me.”
Battle During Home Race
Sauber team boss Jonathan Wheatley acknowledged the mixed feelings of his two drivers. “It was a mixed day for us. Unfortunately, Nico had an engine problem during the formation lap. But Gabriel drove a great race. I also want to compliment Haas and Oliver Bearman, they did fantastic work today, although it’s obviously bitter to see them take so many points in the midfield battle. The good news is that in two weeks in Brazil, we get the chance to try again during Gabi’s first home race.”
