The current Sauber Formula 1 team will transform into an official Audi factory team in 2026. With the support of Qatari investors, the German manufacturer will appear under its own brand name on the grid as early as next year. Drivers Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto have committed to the project long-term and praise the progress the team is making in the run-up to this transformation.

With a seventh place in the constructors’ championship, Sauber has made a significant step forward this year. Where the team finished last with only four World Championship points last season, both Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto have now scored regularly. The highlight was Hülkenberg’s long-awaited podium finish at the British GP – his first in 239 Grands Prix. Sauber now stands at 51 points, just one point behind Aston Martin.

‘Audi Takeover Looks Positive’

During the Hungarian GP, the last weekend before the summer break, the Sauber drivers were asked by Formula1.com about their first half of the season. “It’s been a very positive start,” Hülkenberg responded cheerfully. “In Barcelona, we really managed to turn the tide with the major upgrades. If you look at where we were during the winter tests and where we are now, this is absolutely a huge progress.””Regarding the future, the German has high expectations, partly due to the upcoming arrival of Audi. “Of course, a lot will change technically,” he referred to the new regulations for 2026. “We can only speculate, but behind the scenes, a lot of work is being done on the team and infrastructure. So far, it looks positive. There is still a lot of work to do to catch up with the top, but we are clearly moving in the right direction.”

Promising Bortoleto

Formula 1 debutant Bortoleto is also making his mark. In Hungary, he drove to his best result so far with a sixth place. He speaks of a positive atmosphere within the team: “Only half a year has passed, but it feels like we have been working together for years – we have already had so many races. I am super happy with how the season is going and how much I have learned this year,” he said. “When I look at what we have achieved as a team, it gives me enormous satisfaction.”

Yet, the Brazilian remains critical: “There are always points that can be improved. I keep that to myself – I will work on it as best I can. There are always things that can be improved, but I embrace that challenge. Fine-tuning things here and there ultimately makes me a better driver.”
