Red Bull team boss Christian Horner appears to hint that Racing Bulls is grappling with similar issues as Red Bull. The sister team uses the same wind tunnel and tools as the Austrians. Horner previously identified the correlation problems between data from the outdated wind tunnel and from the track as the culprit behind Red Bull’s problems.
Although Max Verstappen does not want to attribute Red Bull’s problems solely to the outdated wind tunnel, team boss Christian Horner does indeed see flaws in this ‘relic from the Cold War’. The correlation problems between the data from the wind tunnel and from the track, therefore, do not help in finding solutions at Red Bull.
However, Red Bull is not the only team that uses the wind tunnel. Racing Bulls also uses the tool. The team boss is asked by Sky Sports F1 whether the sister team is therefore not struggling with the same problems. “I think so,” Horner reveals. “Because they are not on pole position in Saudi Arabia, are they?”
Balancing Act
So, according to Horner, why is the VCARB 02, also according to Yuki Tsunoda, more manageable? “I think they have a certain balance in the car, which allows the drivers to drive a lap with a lot of confidence. The car also has a predictable amount of understeer. However, on the long runs, you can see that the car can’t keep up. Of course, they use the same tunnel (as Red Bull) and the same resources. That’s allowed within the rules, but it shows that if you lack a certain balance, you also lose valuable time on the track.”
