In the newly released footage of Logan Sargeant’s severe crash during the third free practice, it’s clear to see: George Russell’s Mercedes nearly comes to a halt when he arrives at the scene of the accident. The British driver confirmed that he was about to exit his car to assist his colleague in the burning vehicle.
The fire was raging, but Logan Sargeant initially seemed unaware of its severity. Only after receiving urgent advice from the pit wall to exit the Williams as quickly as possible, which he immediately followed, was he truly safe. Russell, assuming Sargeant might be unconscious due to the lack of movement from the cockpit, intended to quickly park his car and help his colleague. In the end, this was not necessary.
The incident with Sargeant faintly echoed the 1973 accident when Roger Williamson crashed during the Dutch GP in Zandvoort. His car caught fire, and fellow driver David Purley tried in vain to rescue him from the burning vehicle.
