Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has once again been harsh in his criticism of Sergio Pérez. The 81-year-old Austrian is very ‘disappointed’ that the Mexican had another disappointing weekend in his home country. Marko also finds it incomprehensible that Pérez made a rookie mistake at the start of his home race. However, the advisor has words of praise for Visa RB driver Liam Lawson.
Sergio Pérez’s slump in form continued during his home race in Mexico. Despite the driver’s hopes of turning the tide in his home country, Pérez ultimately ended up at the back of the field and crossed the finish line in seventeenth place. Therefore, Red Bull advisor Marko does not mince his words in his criticism of the Mexican.
“We know that qualifying is not his strong suit, but being eliminated in Q1 is very disappointing,” Marko begins his analysis of Pérez’s poor weekend in his column for Speedweek. “The fact that a man with his experience then positions the car incorrectly in the starting box is incomprehensible and very unfortunate. Because his start was sensational. Checo received a five-second penalty for the start violation.During the rest of the race, things only went from bad to worse for the Mexican, partly due to the incident with Liam Lawson, according to Marko. “Then a fight ensued with Lawson, where both drivers were too impetuous. Liam even gave his opponent the finger. He later apologized for this and we accepted it,” Marko is much more lenient towards the Visa RB driver. “Unfortunately, this fight resulted in significant damage to Pérez’s car. With significantly reduced downforce, Sergio’s car was no longer fast enough to do anything.”
Compliments for Lawson
Lawson then receives a compliment from the 81-year-old Austrian. “I was impressed by his constant improvement in Mexico,” says Marko. “Without Tsunoda’s botched round, the New Zealander would have ended up in the top ten in qualifying. So far, Liam Lawson has proven his qualities and confirmed the trust in him.”
