165 World Championship points. Second place in the championship. At first glance, Ferrari isn’t doing too poorly in this anniversary season. However, the team has been under fire in recent weeks. Lewis Hamilton‘s long-awaited debut has been notably challenging so far, and the Scuderia is nowhere near the speed of McLaren. Rumor has it that Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur is under pressure; the upcoming Grands Prix could be ‘decisive’ for his future.
McLaren convincingly won the constructors’ championship last year, while Max Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive world title. It’s easy to forget that Ferrari finished second in that incredibly exciting season. Moreover, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz won three and two Grands Prix, respectively. In the final races, they were hardly inferior to McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
Uncertain Future for Vasseur?
Expectations for the current season were high. Could Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur, with seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton on board, finally bring the title back to Maranello? So far, that doesn’t seem to be the case. According to the renowned sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Frenchman now even has to fear for his position within the team. “The next three Grands Prix, from Montreal via the Red Bull Ring to Silverstone, will be decisive for Vasseur, whose contract with Ferrari expires at the end of this year,” the Italians wrote.
“To ensure the continuity of the project, it would be important for Vasseur himself to oversee the introduction of the 2026 Ferrari,” the report continued. “In all respects, he is the spiritual father of that car. But if the results do not improve by the end of the season, he risks losing his position,” warned La Gazzetta.
