The future of Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari came into question after the Hungarian Grand Prix. After the seven-time world champion called himself ‘useless’ and urged his team to change drivers, doubts were raised about his multi-year contract. Former driver and ex-FIA steward Johnny Herbert agrees with Bernie Ecclestone; Ferrari should not chase proven champions like Max Verstappen, but should instead seek out young talent.

For now, it seems unlikely that Hamilton will hang up his racing helmet prematurely. Reportedly, he has a three-year contract with Ferrari. Although the current results are disappointing and the 40-year-old Brit still looks uncomfortable in his red car, the new technical regulations of 2026 could potentially bring about change. Perhaps Hamilton will get the chance to prove himself again next year and fight for his coveted eighth world title in Formula 1.

Young Talent

If Hamilton does decide to retire, then Scuderia will need to find a suitable successor. Reigning world champion Max Verstappen is the most coveted driver in the paddock, but according to Herbert, Ferrari does not necessarily need to attract a proven force. “I don’t think Verstappen will step into Ferrari,” said the Brit to a betting platform. “I think Ferrari should go for a young talent instead.” Former F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone gave a similar response earlier. He sees a future at Ferrari for rookies Gabriel Bortoleto and Isack Hadjar.”Instead of pursuing Verstappen, Ferrari could opt for a familiar face, as Herbert explained. “Carlos Sainz could make a return,” he said. “I’ve read that he would always say ‘yes’ if Ferrari offered him a seat. At the moment, he’s finding it tougher than expected at Williams.” Sainz is currently trailing behind teammate Alex Albon. “At Ferrari, he was very strong and performed at the same level as Charles Leclerc,” concluded Herbert. “Moreover, Sainz is still young.”

Instead of chasing after Max Verstappen, Ferrari could also bring back Carlos Sainz, according to Johnny Herbert.
