Susie Wolff believes that Lewis Hamilton deserves more recognition for the influence he has had on the culture and image of Formula 1. According to the director of the F1 Academy, the impact of the seven-time world champion extends far beyond his achievements on the track. Throughout his career, Hamilton has been committed to numerous charitable causes – primarily in the area of inclusivity – and has regularly broken the stereotypical image of a Formula 1 driver.

In the High Performance podcast, Wolff spoke about the positive changes within the sport, expressing her admiration for Hamilton’s contribution. “I receive a lot of support from the sport,” said the former Scottish driver. “Many people praise me for the growth of the F1 Academy – it’s such an asset, because we are supported by the various Formula 1 teams. I have the full support of the sport and receive all the investments needed to continue building. There is a real authenticity in the Formula 1 people who want the F1 Academy to succeed, precisely because they know it can have a positive impact on the sport.”

‘Hamilton Steps Off the Beaten Path’

Hamilton has been a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion within motorsport for years. Wolff, who raced against him during her karting days, praises his willingness to use his voice for change. “Lewis has always been willing to speak out for the good,” she explained. “He is always aware of his impact and how he can have a positive influence.” According to Wolff, Hamilton’s work is also felt off the track. His habit of ‘stepping off the beaten path’ has, in her view, made the sport more modern and culturally relevant.

“He has absolutely carved his own path and had a huge impact on the sport,” argued Wolff. “It didn’t surprise me at all that he stood up and spoke – he always does, even when something hasn’t been said but needs to be said.” Wolff believes that Hamilton doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves for the way he has helped transform Formula 1. “He turned that walk to the paddock into a catwalk,” she grinned. “With that, he has played a role in making Formula 1 culturally relevant – not only within motorsport, but also beyond. He is someone with a powerful voice, and he uses it for good,” concluded Wolff. “Others should take a leaf out of his book.”
