Lewis Hamilton is the latest in a growing list of advocates for the return of V10 engines. The British driver shares how the sound and sensation of the naturally aspirated engine first sparked his love for Formula 1. Hamilton, therefore, welcomes the return of the V10, provided it uses sustainable fuels.

A potential return to V10 engines is becoming an increasingly realistic option for Formula 1. Both Formula 1 CEO Domenicali and FIA president Ben Sulayem have previously hinted at considering the reintroduction of the naturally aspirated engine. Although there is still much debate about when the V10 would make its comeback, Lewis Hamilton also expresses his support for a return.

“It’s no secret that the V6 has never sounded great,” says the seven-time world champion. Hamilton then shares a personal anecdote about how he fell in love with Formula 1 thanks to the naturally aspirated engine. “I remember the first time I went to an F1 race in 1996 at Spa and Michael (Schumacher) came through turn 1. I was 12 or 13, and my ribcage was just vibrating. From then on, I was hooked.”

“It was the most amazing thing I’ve ever felt or heard (the V10 engine). Over the years, we’ve lost that,” the Brit continues. “So if we can go back to those great sounding engines and still meet all the sustainable goals, why not?”
