Over the course of 75 years, Formula 1 has seen a plethora of memorable moments. Some have brought tears, others laughter, but all have been etched into our collective or individual memories. Key figures from the Dutch motorsport scene share, in no particular order, their favourite moments, memories, or highlights from the rich history of F1. PART 2: Giedo van der Garde.
From victories and losses to life and death, the history of the pinnacle of motorsport encompasses a wide range of legendary moments of all shapes and sizes. This is evident from the list that Giedo van der Garde mentions, both from 75 years of Formula 1 and from his own career.
Regarding the rich history of the sport, he chooses three. “The championships of Michael Schumacher and Ferrari (the German became world champion seven times, five of which were consecutive with the Italians from 2000 to 2004)”, he mentions. But also one of the most tragic moments ever in F1: “The fatal accident of Ayrton Senna.” Van der Garde concludes with a happier note, namely the phenomenon that made F1 popular in our country in the 90s: “The Jos Verstappen craze.”
And in relation to his own career? Giedo van der Garde also picks out three things here. “My first Formula 1 race in Melbourne”, is something he will logically remember as a debutant for the rest of his days. But also special performances are reviewed. “The third place during Q1 at the Spa circuit (Belgian GP, August 2013). And certainly, life at the very top.”
