On Sunday, George Russell claimed victory at the Singapore Grand Prix. As title contenders Max Verstappen and Lando Norris battled for the remaining podium spots behind him, the British driver confidently secured the win. This marks the second victory for the Mercedes driver this season and the fifth in his Formula 1 career. After the race, an exhausted Russell admitted that the pace had somewhat surprised him.
Under the artificial lights of the Marina Bay Street Circuit, George Russell drove unchallenged to his second win of the year. On Saturday, he had already claimed pole position with an impressive qualifying lap. Despite the threat of Max Verstappen in second place, he crossed the finish line first on Sunday. “It feels amazing,” a drained Russell responded afterwards. “I’m very grateful to the team, they did an incredible job.”
‘Norris looked very fast’
“Friday was a challenging day for various reasons, I didn’t feel comfortable in the car,” Russell continued. “But once we got into Q3, I felt great. That’s, of course, when it really counts. I admit, I was a bit nervous when I saw that Max (Verstappen) was starting on the soft tyre. Fortunately, we had an excellent first stint and only increased the gap from there.”
“I said it yesterday, if I had to make a list at the beginning of the year of where Mercedes could win, Singapore would probably have been at the bottom,” Russell concluded. “So we’ll have to check where this sudden speed came from. At the same time, I have to be realistic for the upcoming Grands Prix. Lando (Norris) looked very fast.”
