After securing third place in the Australian Grand Prix, George Russell also managed to finish on the podium in Shanghai. The British driver finished behind both McLarens, scoring more valuable points for Mercedes. Russell looks back with pride on his race weekend, during which he made hardly any mistakes. Knowing that he can’t yet compete with the McLarens, he is more than satisfied with a third-place finish.
“Third place is a good result,” George Russell commented after the Chinese Grand Prix. “I drove a very strong race. We knew that McLaren was a bit too fast for us, so it’s good to end the weekend like this.” Russell was one of the first drivers to note that one pit stop would be sufficient in Shanghai. The front-runners later followed his example. “From the start, I had the feeling that we could make a one-stopper, and that turned out to be much easier than expected,” he said. “The car was simply very good.”
“It was perhaps my best weekend in Formula 1,” said Russell, who in the past sometimes made costly mistakes under pressure. “I’m talking purely about my performance. To then finish on the podium is of course fantastic. Charles Leclerc put me under pressure for a while and in the last laps it was quite exciting whether I could overtake Lando Norris, but in the end, I can be very satisfied with this.”
