George Russell recently revealed that he feels he owes his parents one and a half million British pounds. The Mercedes driver spoke candidly about the sacrifices his family made to get him into Formula 1. According to the 27-year-old Brit, his father, Steve Russell, in particular, invested a lot of money in his son’s racing career. Now in his seventh season in the premier class, Russell earns enough to more than repay his parents.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Russell said he is repaying his parents approximately one and a half million pounds – equivalent to about 1.7 million euros. This is the amount his father is said to have spent on his junior career. It is well known that karting is an expensive hobby, let alone the transition to Formula 3, and Formula 2.

‘Shaped for Life’

Russell is very grateful to his parents for all their support and feels he owes them for those investments. “On the one hand, my father might have hoped for a closer bond with his son,” said Russell. “On the other hand, those years in the training classes have shaped me for life.”

The British driver made his debut with the Williams team in 2019. Three years later, he made the switch to Mercedes, where he became teammates with Lewis Hamilton. The 27-year-old Brit is now a three-time race winner in Formula 1. It could be argued that his parents made a wise investment. Multiple sources also report that Russell earns approximately fifteen million dollars per year, so he can undoubtedly afford the one and a half million.

Alison and Steve Russell, George Russell’s parents, were present at the 2022 British Grand Prix.
