George Russell is attracting attention. The British driver is reportedly a leading candidate to join Aston Martin as their main driver from 2026. The same season will see the introduction of new sports regulations, and the British racing team is reportedly seriously considering Russell as part of their future plans.

Aston Martin has previously brought over top designer Adrian Newey from Red Bull. It is Newey’s task to develop a competitive car for the 2026 season. From then on, both the new engine and chassis regulations will come into effect. According to the usually well-informed Motorsport.com, George Russell is currently a serious candidate to drive Newey’s design. Max Verstappen has also been linked to Aston Martin in the past.

The rumors about Aston Martin’s interest in Russell do not come out of the blue. The driver’s contract with his current employer, Mercedes, expires at the end of the season, and it is officially still unclear whether the Silver Arrows want to continue the collaboration. However, team boss Toto Wolff hinted in Montréal that a contract extension for Russell is imminent. “George gives us every reason to get (the contract extension) done quickly,” the Austrian told Sky Sports F1. “We know what he is capable of and he has been leading this team for a while now. He has the pace and the right attitude.”

Russell Remains Loyal to Mercedes

Russell himself is also confident that he will still be driving for the Silver Arrows in 2026. The driver has been connected to the Mercedes team since 2017 and has no plans to leave the Germans anytime soon. “There are teams that have shown interest, but I have always been open about my intention to stay with Mercedes,” says the Brit. “That has always been clear. I remain loyal to Mercedes. They gave me the chance to get into Formula 1. I am happy where I am, and we are in no hurry to finalize the contract negotiations.”
