A new Formula 1 team also means new opportunities for drivers seeking a spot in the premier class. General Motors is set to debut on the grid in 2026, offering two drivers the chance to compete at the pinnacle of motorsport. The American racing team is expected to primarily contract American drivers. However, Ralf Schumacher questions whether this is a wise decision.
“I’m pretty sure they (General Motors) will rely on American talent,” former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher told the German branch of Sky Sports. “But to be very honest, the level of IndyCar is not comparable to that of Formula 1. Numerous test drives have already proven this. Of course, this doesn’t mean that there aren’t any undiscovered super talents lurking there.”
If General Motors indeed opts for an American, it’s highly likely that this driver will come from the IndyCar class. Advisor and board member Mario Andretti has already set his sights on 24-year-old Colton Herta. The American currently drives for Andretti Global, but was previously linked to a Formula 1 seat at AlphaTauri. “Last year, he drove a very successful test for McLaren,” said Andretti senior. “It’s very interesting to see what he can do in a Formula 1 car.”
Mick Schumacher
When it was announced that General Motors would be entering Formula 1, many experts immediately pointed to Mick Schumacher, Ralf’s nephew. The young German has been working hard on a comeback since his departure from Haas, but has not yet managed to return to the grid. “I assume they will choose someone familiar with the sport,” Schumacher emphasized. “After all, they will have to do everything for the first time, so they will face a damn tough challenge. Therefore, you need someone you can trust and who you know can handle it.”Whether Mick is contracted or not, Ralf Schumacher is certainly excited about the idea of an eleventh team. “Of course, it will take some time before they are competitive, but General Motors is a gigantic company, so that will surely work out,” he continued. “Moreover, it is an important development for Formula 1 – the sport is still growing. I’m really looking forward to it, because it ultimately only offers more opportunities for young drivers.”
An eleventh team on the Formula 1 grid provides a solution for Ralf Schumacher’s nephew, Mick Schumacher, who is still hoping for a comeback.”
