Pierre Gasly has made cryptic remarks about Yuki Tsunoda‘s issues at Red Bull Racing. The French driver, who briefly partnered with Max Verstappen in 2019 before returning to the junior team Toro Rosso, highlighted a challenging dilemma that a Formula 1 driver within a top team faces.
“What’s difficult is, there are many things that can’t be said because you’re a driver. You work for a team and as a professional, you can’t share all the information about specific situations,” Gasly tells Motorsportweek.com.
Gasly: “When you talk to Yuki, I know things that can’t be said, and that’s not easy. You try to do the best for the team, and sometimes you’re given something to make it work, but sometimes it just doesn’t work the way you want for various reasons.”
Tsunoda’s Difficult Season
Tsunoda is having a difficult season with the Milton Keynes-based racing team. The Japanese driver, who replaced Liam Lawson after two Grands Prix, has so far only scored seven points in twelve races. His seventeenth place in Hungary also marked the unwanted record of the longest point-less streak of a Red Bull driver in the twenty-year history of the team.
Gasly emphasizes that he is in contact with Tsunoda and gives him advice from his own experience. “I just try to talk as a friend and give advice on things that might help him. In the end, it’s up to him and the team to make it work and take the right steps.”
For now, Tsunoda’s position at Red Bull seems secure for the remaining part of the season, although team advisor Helmut Marko has previously indicated that the summer period is traditionally used to critically evaluate the performances of second drivers.”
