Mick Doohan, a five-time world champion in the 500cc motorcycle racing during the 90s, has always been a fan of Formula 1. He recalls having good relationships with F1 racers like Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard. “And I still am,” says the father of Alpine test driver, Jack Doohan. He shares insights about his son, the differences between MotoGP and F1, and more.

Have You Always Been Interested in Four Wheels, Not Just Two?

“Oh, absolutely. As a motorcycle racer, I closely followed Formula 1. I always tried to watch as many races as possible, hoping they wouldn’t coincide with our own races. Moreover, I got along well with many drivers in car racing and kept in touch with them.”

Which Drivers Were Those?

“You’re talking about people like Michael Schumacher, a great champion in his time. I had contact with him, but also, for example, a lot with David Coulthard. We got along well. And still do, David and I are still friends. We often run into each other in the paddock when I’m at a Formula 1 Grand Prix and he is too.”

Reflecting on a Successful Career in 500cc, the Predecessor of MotoGP

“Without a doubt, it was a highly successful period, that’s clear (Doohan won the title in five consecutive seasons, from 1994 to 1998). Just like Formula 1 and the rest of motorsport, the world of motorcycle racing is and was a beautiful one. I have fantastic memories of that time. The successes, the exciting races and special moments, a whole career long. With the five world titles as the highlight. That stays with you forever.”

Comparing the Worlds of Motorsport and Autosport, Specifically MotoGP and Formula 1

“Two and four wheels, haha. But seriously: differences always exist, even between the past and the present. So also between the two branches of sport: the calendar is different, the setup of a weekend for example also, the rules of course. But ultimately, the beauty is that we, whether you are of two or four wheels, all share a passion for speed. They are two amazing worlds. I enjoy Formula 1, although I am here now primarily as the father of Jack. I hope that my son does as well as possible, currently at Alpine. And that he can become a permanent Formula 1 driver.”

Sharing Personal Experiences and Advice

“I think so, I hope so at least. I can’t, won’t and shouldn’t explain to him how to drive fast in a car, he knows more about that himself. But in my own career, I’ve learned things that he might also find useful. What exactly his future holds is not yet clear. But I will support and help him wherever I can. And I am his biggest fan, his father. When he has to drive, I am more nervous than when I was driving myself. Back then I had control, now I don’t.”

Attending the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, Despite a Heart for Motorsport in Assen

“I was in Assen at the end of June, during the TT. It is and remains a wonderful event on a beautiful circuit. I almost lost my leg there once, but I also celebrated many successes in Assen. So I like to go there. Just like at the Zandvoort circuit, a beautiful and historic motorsport circuit with a fantastic Formula 1 atmosphere.”
