Before Max Verstappen attempts to secure his third consecutive victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, let’s take a trip down memory lane. Nearly 30 years ago, another driver made a significant impact at the Hungaroring. Jos Verstappen, in his rookie year with Benetton, became the first Dutchman to grace the Formula 1 podium, much to the delight of the Hungarian fans.
Jos Verstappen qualified in twelfth place on the grid, a stark contrast to his teammate Michael Schumacher, who was starting from pole position for the fourth time in his budding career. However, on Sunday, the Dutchman drove an impressive race, gradually closing in on the leaders. Ultimately, he was able to capitalize on the team’s strategies and an unfortunate retirement by Martin Brundle. Verstappen secured third place, becoming the first Dutchman on the Formula 1 podium.
The 1994 Hungarian Grand Prix
In 1994, Jos Verstappen was contracted by Benetton, which was led by Flavio Briatore. After four DNFs and an eighth place in Great Britain, the Hungarian Grand Prix turned out to be a celebration for the Dutch driver.
Despite a mediocre qualification, Jos Verstappen managed to make up quite a few places in the race. In the final stages, he was running in fourth place in his B194.
In the very last lap, Martin Brundle (McLaren Peugeot) experienced electrical problems. He had to give up his third place to Jos Verstappen, who thus narrowly achieved a podium finish.
Michael Schumacher crowned himself the winner in Hungary. The German driver finished ahead of rival Damon Hill (P2) and increased his lead in the championship.
