This year, Robin Frijns is active in racing on three fronts. In Formula E, he is now a veteran, in his ninth season. However, despite all his experience, things are not really going well at Envision Racing this year, although Frijns recently scored his first four World Championship points of the season with an eighth place in Miami.
In Formula E, Frijns feels that the racing factor has become too small. “We call it cycling. It’s like riding in a peloton. Nobody wants to lead because it uses too much energy. You’d rather sit behind in the slipstream, so you can save energy for the end of the race. The fastest and the best often don’t win and I think that’s wrong. Luck plays too big a role.”
Has the fighting style taken away Frijns’ enjoyment in Formula E? Well, not that, but it might also have to do with my accident.” Frijns crashed very unfortunately in Mexico just over two years ago, suffered a severe hand/wrist fracture, and ended up in intensive care. “The bone was in five pieces. It’s not a problem anymore, but I notice that there is something that wasn’t there before. The willingness to take risks is still there, but the enjoyment is, especially due to the regulations, somewhat less.”
