Following the successful return of the Grand Prix in China, Formula 1 is considering expanding its presence in the Asian sector. Liberty Media CEO, Greg Maffei, sees potential in several Southeast Asian countries, all of which are eager to host a race on their home turf. According to Maffei, Thailand, South Korea, and Indonesia have already expressed interest in organizing a Grand Prix.

During the race weekend in Monaco, Maffei discussed the possibilities for Formula 1 in Asia. The success of the Chinese Grand Prix proved that there is a growing demand among Asian fans for local events. “The race in China was hugely successful,” said Maffei. “There is so much recognition when you have a driver from a particular country,” he referred to Zhou Guanyu, the first driver to race in Shanghai on his home ground.

“However, beyond China, there is much more interest in Formula 1 in Asia,” the American continued. “Thailand, Seoul, and also Indonesia are all interested. We look at where our fans are, where a good race can be run, and who can afford a Grand Prix,” he explained. “Based on that, I think there is easily room for another race in Southeast Asia.”

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali was a guest in Bangkok at the end of April to discuss a street race in the Thai capital with the prime minister. Meanwhile, a new Formula 1 circuit is being built in South Korea. The country has already hosted a race four times – between 2010 and 2013, the Korean International Circuit was a regular stop for the drivers.
