Formula 1 is contemplating plans to host a short race at the end of the season for all young (test) drivers who have only been allowed to participate in free practice sessions throughout the year. This would provide them with an opportunity to hone their skills in a competitive setting. Team bosses are enthusiastic about a potential ‘rookie race’.
During a special press conference leading up to the Italian Grand Prix, the plans for a rookie race were presented to several team bosses. Toto Wolff of Mercedes responded positively to the proposal. “We have already been able to discuss it within the Formula 1 commission,” he said. “I think we are all striving to give young drivers more opportunities.”
Benefits of a Rookie Race
According to Wolff, a rookie race provides an opportunity to better prepare young drivers for the premier class. “If you let them drive during a regular race weekend, it affects the performances of the main drivers,” the Austrian explained. “The outcome can turn out differently, which can be quite damaging when you’re fighting for the championship. A special rookie race is the only way to let them go through a full race weekend, where they can push the car to the limit.”
Insufficient Mileage for Rookies
Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur expressed his support for the idea, but emphasized that there are several logistical challenges. “With the current regulations and the three test days you have during the winter, we can’t give the rookies enough mileage,” the Frenchman acknowledged. “We could give them more free practice, but they are often busy enough in Formula 2.”
According to Vasseur, the teams can’t always afford to put a rookie in the car. “During the sprint weekends, we obviously can’t give up a free practice,” he explained. “And on some circuits, the risk is simply too high; in Singapore, Monaco or Baku, the first free practice is too important for us. This leaves very few opportunities.”
“A rookie race would be a good opportunity to give them a full weekend,” Vasseur concluded. “They can then experience what it’s like to drive a free practice, a qualification and a real start. It’s not easy to organize, but I support it.”
Formula 1 CEO’s Proposal for a Special Rookie Race
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali spoke in August about a special rookie race at the end of the season – the team bosses are enthusiastic about this proposal.
