The GP Canada is set for a new date, as confirmed by Formula 1 on Monday. Starting from 2026, the Canadian race will be held on the third or fourth weekend of May, a shift from its previous June slot. The change in the calendar is part of Formula 1’s efforts to make the sport more sustainable.
From 2026, fans of the GP Canada will have less time to wait before the Formula 1 circus lands in Montreal again. By organizing the Canadian race earlier in the year, Formula 1 hopes to make the calendar more logical and sustainable. Teams will no longer need to make an extra trip across the Atlantic Ocean after the start of the European part of the calendar.
The Canadian Grand Prix will take over the traditional spot of the Monaco Grand Prix. Formula 1 had previously announced that the race in the principality would move to the first week of June. The relocation of the Canadian race is just the latest change to the Formula 1 calendar. Earlier, the Japanese Grand Prix was moved to spring, and it was announced that the Azerbaijan Grand Prix will take place in the fall.
On the Right Track
“I am extremely grateful to the organization and our government partners involved in the Canadian Grand Prix,” says Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenciali in the official press release. “We greatly applaud the tremendous commitment of all parties involved, especially to start the build-up of the event earlier than in the past.”
“The change not only makes the future course of our calendar smoother and more sustainable, but also better from a logistical point of view. Our Net Zero by 2030 pledge remains a priority. It is thanks to such changes that we are on the right track to achieve our goal,” says the Formula 1 boss.
