The FIA has increased the maximum permitted speed in the pit lane during the Grand Prix weekend in Singapore. In recent years, drivers were not allowed to exceed sixty kilometers per hour in the pit lane of the Marina Bay Street Circuit, but this speed has been increased to eighty kilometers per hour for the upcoming weekend. The governing body hopes to encourage multiple strategies during the race. This is the second Grand Prix after the Dutch GP where the FIA has implemented this rule change.
The maximum speed in the pit lane for the Singapore GP was previously sixty kilometers per hour, due to the limited space in the pits. The FIA only increased the maximum speed for this edition of the night race after the pit lane was widened by a meter. However, the governing body hopes that by increasing the maximum speed, teams will consider different strategies for the main event on Sunday.

The higher speed in the pit lane means that drivers spend less time during a pit stop, making a two-stopper more attractive. The FIA had previously implemented a similar measure for the Dutch GP at Zandvoort. Then too, the maximum speed was increased from sixty to eighty kilometers per hour. However, the race was interrupted by multiple safety car periods, so the effectiveness of the rule change could not be measured.
