Former world champion Jacques Villeneuve did not appreciate the accusations from Daniel Ricciardo. During the race weekend in Canada, there was a constant exchange of insults between the two gentlemen. In a final response, Villeneuve pointed out to the Visa RB driver his role as a model. Ricciardo was indeed harsh on the 53-year-old Canadian.

The dispute between Ricciardo and Villeneuve began on Friday when the latter openly wondered on Sky Sports why the Australian still deserves a spot in Formula 1. “If you can’t handle it, just go home,” he referred to the mediocre performances of the honey badger. “There is someone else who will take your place. We’re talking about the top of the sport, there’s no reason to keep coming up with excuses.”

Ricciardo did not let it go and hit back hard on Saturday. “I heard that Villeneuve is spouting nonsense again, but he always does,” laughed the Visa RB driver, who had just qualified in fifth place. “I don’t give him the pleasure of this, all those people like Villeneuve can go to hell.”

After the race on Sunday, the Canadian was able to deflect these accusations. “His reaction was a bit personal,” Villeneuve explained. “In addition, he should not forget that he is a role model. Be professional in your responses. There are also children who look up to you.” Finally, he urged Ricciardo to develop a thicker skin. “You also have to be able to deal with criticism. On the other hand, [my comment] helped, because he drove significantly better.” However, the eighth place in Montreal was not enough to convince Villeneuve. “He will really have to prove himself again.”
