In the lead-up to the Canadian Grand Prix, rumors began to circulate in the Italian media about a possible departure of Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur. The company’s top brass in Maranello is reportedly losing patience with the Frenchman, who was appointed as Formula 1 chief in 2023. Over the past few months, Ferrari has indeed appeared to be in a slump. An Italian politician has already suggested a replacement – Alpine boss Flavio Briatore, he believes, should be given a chance at Ferrari.
The rumors about Fred Vasseur’s possible departure began after speculation that Red Bull team boss Christian Horner had piqued Ferrari’s interest. The team vehemently denied these reports, but Vasseur’s future was nonetheless brought into question. The renowned sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport even reported that Vasseur would only have three more Grand Prix races to regain Ferrari’s trust – and this was even before the race weekend in Montreal.
Flavio Briatore
The depth of Ferrari’s roots in Italian culture was once again evident this week. Even national politics is now getting involved in the debate around the racing team. Ignazio La Russa, president of the Italian Senate, shared his view on the ideal team boss and suggested Flavio Briatore as the potential savior of Ferrari. “Flavio is a good friend of mine,” La Russa said in a conversation with La Politica nel Pallone. “No matter what he takes on, he always does well.”
“However, I don’t think that even a great team boss like Flavio Briatore would be enough to get Ferrari back on track at this point,” he continued. “I believe – although I have little understanding of technology, unlike my son – that more is needed than just a new team boss.” Still, La Russa is convinced that Flavio Briatore can play a valuable role at Ferrari. “He can not only grow the team, but he also knows how to get things done,” he emphasized.”
