Just as we’ve blinked, two Grands Prix have already been raced in 2025. The current Formula 1 season is well underway, with the third race weekend on the horizon. For Ferrari, the anniversary year has not unfolded as hoped. The Scuderia has ‘only’ scored seventeen points and occupies the fifth place in the constructors’ championship. The worst season start in years is a fact.

Partly due to the double disqualification in Shanghai, Ferrari stands at seventeen points in the constructors’ championship. Rookie Lewis Hamilton, who crossed the finish line first during the sprint race in China, has so far scored nine points, while teammate Charles Leclerc has collected eight. This puts the team in fifth place in the championship. Since the introduction of the current points system in 2010, Ferrari – traditionally one of the powerhouses in Formula 1 – has never had such a poor start to a season.

Disappointing Seasons

The last time Ferrari started the year so disappointingly was in 2020. After two races, the counter in Maranello stood at nineteen points. Charles Leclerc finished second during the opening race in Austria, scoring valuable points for the team. However, after a crash between him and teammate Sebastian Vettel during the subsequent Styrian GP, it took a long time for new points to be added. Ferrari ended that covid-season in sixth place.

Ferrari also had a difficult start in 2014. With the introduction of the hybrid era, drivers Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen could only score thirty points in the first two Grands Prix. Not a disastrous start, but the Scuderia clearly lagged behind competitors such as Mercedes, Red Bull, and Williams. Yet that paled in comparison to the disastrous season start of 2009. The F60 proved so uncompetitive that Ferrari did not score a single point in the first two races. A series of costly mistakes led to the team occupying only the tenth place in the standings after two Grands Prix.
