The debate about language use in Formula 1 continues! More than a week after Max Verstappen used the word ‘fucked’ in a press conference and was subsequently reprimanded by the FIA, veteran Fernando Alonso shares his perspective on the matter. The Spaniard, who has raced in more Grand Prix than anyone else, is keen to offer some collegial advice to his Dutch competitor. “You just have to behave,” says the two-time world champion.
FIA’s Plan to Crack Down on Profanity in Formula 1
The Spanish newspaper Marca asked Fernando Alonso about the FIA’s plans to crack down on swearing in Formula 1. During the race weekend, the organization found their first ‘victim’ in Max Verstappen. The Dutch driver did not mince his words during a press conference and referred to his RB20 as ‘fucked’. He had to pay for this later with a community service penalty.
Alonso’s Take on the Responsibility of Being a Role Model
Alonso realizes that he, like Max Verstappen, is an idol for fans around the world. “At this level, you realize that many people look up to us,” explained the Spanish star. After twenty seasons in the sport, he understands better than anyone that this comes with a certain responsibility. “If you’re a driver or someone with a public function, you just have to behave.”
“Fans can give you a lot of love, a lot of motivation, but there are also certain expectations,” Alonso continued. “You have to handle that responsibly. You have a role model function, even if you’d rather not. If you want to say something that’s not correct, you just have to hold back. You have a responsibility towards your fans – those people have to be able to believe in you,” concluded the Spaniard.
