Before the new Formula 1 season kicks off in Melbourne, the teams first travel to Bahrain for pre-season testing. At the Bahrain International Circuit, all drivers get three days to familiarize themselves with the new cars. Therefore, Max Verstappen and his colleagues will already be in action in front of the fans at the end of February.

Firstly, the who, what, where, and when. From February 26 to February 28, the Bahrain International Circuit opens its doors to Formula 1. All teams get the chance to extensively test the new equipment. Usually, each driver takes one and a half days for his part. The three-day event is a crucial baseline measurement, as it provides the first opportunity to test the new cars on the circuit. Engineers check tire wear, aerodynamics, and engine performance to ensure the cars are competitive. In the run-up to the opening race in Australia, all data is thoroughly analyzed, after which teams put the finishing touches on the ideal set-up.

The test days in Bahrain are the only official opportunity for the teams to test the cars under real conditions. In practice, it often turns out that real miles on the track are more valuable than simulations or wind tunnel tests. Everyone still remembers the debacle around porpoising in 2022 – these problems only came to light during pre-season testing.

Bahrain has been the go-to destination for pre-season testing for several years, as the circuit is perfectly suited for extensive tests. The weather conditions are consistent, and the track features both fast straight sections and sharp corner combinations.

Making the Rounds

In the lead-up to the 2025 season, many drivers will use the test days to familiarize themselves with their new surroundings. After all, there has been a significant reshuffling in Formula 1 over the past season. In addition, five newcomers are making their debut in the premier class. These initial laps can help drivers adapt their driving style and build confidence for the first race.

For fans, it’s important to remember that not everyone shows their full potential. Some teams choose to hide their true speed. In addition, a driver can always drive with less fuel or use a softer tire compound. As a result, lap times during pre-season testing are typically not representative.

Of course, the test days in Bahrain are also widely covered in the international media. Live coverage of all the action on the track is provided via F1 TV and the official Formula 1 broadcasters. You will also find daily updates here on our site. The official times have yet to be confirmed, but the schedule is likely to be the same as in previous years. This means that every day, driving will take place from 06:00 UTC to 15:00 UTC.
