Former Haas team boss, Guenther Steiner, has made a revealing statement about Max Verstappen. According to Steiner, the Dutch driver seriously considered a move to Mercedes in the past. Steiner understands why, as he believes Verstappen stands a better chance of winning another world title with Mercedes.
It’s been seven races since Max Verstappen last claimed a victory, when he crossed the finish line first in Spain. Currently, Red Bull is experiencing a performance slump, which often leaves Verstappen settling for a finish off the podium. Is Verstappen therefore considering a switch to Mercedes?

“I think there’s a high chance of that happening,” says former Haas team boss Steiner in the Red Flags podcast. “We all know that Verstappen wanted to go to Mercedes. And at the moment, he’s not happy where he is.”
Greater Opportunities with Mercedes?
In 2026, a new engine regulation will be implemented, giving multiple teams the opportunity to build a Grand Prix-winning car. Mercedes was already on the rise before the summer break, with three victories in four races, leading Steiner to believe that Verstappen actually has a better chance of securing another world title with Mercedes than with his current employer.
“Max will have a lot of information about where Red Bull’s engine program stands next year. Max will also have a lot of information about where the Mercedes program is next year if Toto tries to lure him there. Then he can make a decision that is not based on hope,” concludes the Italian.
