The special FIA Women in Motorsport commission will support two young karting talents this year, including Dutch Eva Dorrestijn (pictured above right). Along with South African Emma-Rose Dowling, Dorrestijn can count on support and mentorship from the FIA commission during the upcoming FIA Karting Academy Trophy season.
The FIA Karting Academy Trophy is labeled by the FIA itself as ‘a path to a career in motorsport’, and is part of the governing body’s efforts to improve the inclusivity of the sport. Charles Leclerc, George Russell, and Esteban Ocon have previously raced in the karting championship.
The 15-year-old Dorrestijn will participate in the 14 – 16-year-old karting talents category, a whole new age group within the championship. Emma-Rose Dowling, meanwhile, will participate in the OK-Junior category. Last year, Dorrestijn finished eighth in the IAME Series Benelux and was chosen as the best female driver in that championship.
Opportunities for Female Drivers
“The FIA is committed to creating opportunities for female drivers at every level. From the grassroots to professional competition,” says FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem in the press release. “Building an inclusive environment is essential for the long-term success of motorsport. Initiatives like this help us find, promote, and support the very best talent. Moreover, they ensure that our sport remains accessible. That it offers young people from different backgrounds the opportunity to nurture their talent and gain recognition.”
The FIA Karting Academy Trophy season starts in May at the Kartodromo International do Algrave, in Portugal.
